چکیده

The spectrometers onboard the Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS) reveal water vapor absorption in early M-type stars, as early as M2. Previous observations detected H2O vapor absorption only in stars later than M6, with the exception of the recent detection of H2O in β Peg (M2.5 II-III). In our sample of 108 stars, 67 stars have spectral types earlier than M6. The spectral types are established by means of their near-infrared colors on a statistical basis. Among the 67 stars of spectral types earlier than M6, we find water vapor absorption in six stars. The observed absorption features are interpreted using a local thermodynamic equilibrium model. The features are reasonably fitted by model spectra with excitation temperatures of 1000– 1500 K and water column densities of 5×1019 to 1×1020 cm−2. These numbers imply that the H2O molecules are present in a region of the atmosphere, located above the photosphere. Furthermore, our analysis shows a good correlation between the H2O absorption band strength, and the mid-infrared excess due to the circumstellar dust. We discuss the relation between the outer atmosphere and the mass loss.

Water in Emission in the Iso Spectrum of the Early M Supergiant Star Μ Cephei

We report a detection of water in emission in the spectrum of the M2 supergiant star μ Cep (M2Ia) observed by the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) aboard Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and now released as the ISO Archives. The emission first appears in the 6 μm region (ν2 fundamental bands), and then in the 40 μm region (pure rotation lines) despite the rather strong dust emission. The int...

We present an analysis of low resolution infrared spectra for 20 brown dwarf candidates in the core of the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud. Fifteen of the sources display absorption-line spectra characteristic of late-type stars. By comparing the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects with a grid of M dwarf standards, we derive spectral types which are independent of reddeni...

Background and Aim: Dental Amalgam is a common restorative material for posterior teeth. Because of Hg content in the composition of amalgam, during the handling of material, mercury may release as vapor in the environment. Excess amount of mercury vapor can cause serious health problems in dental personnel. The aim of this investigation was to determine mercury vapor concentration in working e...

TiO and H2O absorption lines in cool stellar atmospheres

Over the past decade, model atmospheres and synthetic spectra for late-type stars have improved hand-in-hand with higher quality opacities. In 1994, quality lists of transitions of the water vapor molecule based on ab initio molecular calculations became available (Miller et al. 1994; Schryber, Miller, & Tennyson 1995; Jørgensen, Jensen, & Sørensen 1994) which allowed the computation of the fir...
